Lesson 6

Technical SEO Basics

Why this matters

Technical SEO removes friction. Every fix here directly increases the number of pages that get indexed and rank.

Title tags

Unique per page, under 60 characters, primary keyword first, brand last. Example: 'How to Submit a Sitemap — MikeKnows'.

Meta descriptions

Under 160 characters, action-oriented, includes the keyword. Treat it as ad copy.

H1 structure

Exactly one H1 per page that matches search intent. H2s for sections, H3s for sub-sections.

Internal links

Link new pages from at least 2 existing pages with descriptive anchor text — not 'click here'.

Canonical URLs

Add <link rel='canonical' href='...'/> on every page to consolidate duplicate signals.

Redirects, broken links, speed, mobile

  • 301 (permanent) for moved URLs; never 302 for SEO
  • Run a monthly broken-link sweep
  • Page must load main content in under 2.5 s (LCP)
  • Pass Google's Mobile-Friendly Test
