Test 2-3 thumbnail variants on every upload.

When NOT to use it

Don't clickbait the thumbnail — retention will collapse and the algorithm will bury you.

How to use it

  1. Pick ONE focal point — face, object, or number.
  2. Use high contrast (color and luminance).
  3. Show emotion that matches the promise.
  4. Use ≤3 words of text, readable on mobile at thumb size.
  5. A/B test using YouTube's built-in thumbnail test feature.
